Grow is a small place in King County, Texas, United States. It's called an unincorporated community because it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Grow is located in the north-central part of King County. It is about 85 miles east of a bigger city called Lubbock.
History of Grow
Starting a Community
At the beginning of the 1900s, more and more families moved to the northern part of King County. To help the children in the area, a school was built in 1901. Ora Blackwell was the very first teacher there.
Back then, the community was known as Bala. Ora Blackwell's sister, Mrs. Charles Davidson, was the local postmaster. This meant she was in charge of the post office, which was actually inside the Davidson family's home!
In 1908, a man named Jim Goodwin built a cotton gin in Bala. A cotton gin is a machine that quickly separates cotton fibers from their seeds. This helped the community grow a little bit. Sometime between 1911 and 1912, the name of the community changed from Bala to Grow.
Population Changes Over Time
Like many other places in King County, Grow has always been a mostly rural community. This means it has remained a quiet area with lots of open land, not a big city.
In the 1920s and 1930s, about 25 people lived in Grow. The post office closed in 1930. However, the population actually grew quite a bit after that. In 1941, Grow was home to an estimated 150 people, which was its highest population ever.
But things changed. Many people moved to bigger cities for work and other opportunities. By the end of the 1950s, almost half of Grow's residents had moved away.
By 1970, the school in Grow had joined with the schools in Guthrie. The population had dropped to about 85 people. By 1980, it was down to 70 people. Grow has stayed at about 70 residents ever since then.
