How Grupo Salinas Started
The story of Grupo Salinas began a long time ago, in 1906. That's when a store called "Salinas y Rocha" first opened in Monterrey, Mexico. This store was the very beginning of what would become a large group of companies.
The Growth of Grupo Elektra
In 1950, a company called Grupo Elektra started as a factory that made radios. Just two years later, in 1952, Elektra began making television sets too. The company grew quickly, and by then, it had 70 employees.
Elektra started selling its products directly to customers in 1954. This made it easier for people to buy their electronics. In 1957, Elektra stores began offering credit programs. This meant customers could buy items and pay for them over time. By 1968, Elektra had 12 stores in the region. By 1987, this number had grown to 59 stores. In 1993, Grupo Elektra became a public company. This means its shares could be bought and sold on the Bolsa Mexicana de Valores, which is Mexico's stock exchange.
Expanding into Television
In 1993, Grupo Elektra made a big move. It bought a government television network called Imevisión. Elektra then changed its name to TV Azteca. TV Azteca also became a public company in 1997. Its shares were sold on both the Mexican and New York stock exchanges.
In 2012, Grupo Elektra bought a company called Advance America. This company helps people get small loans that they pay back quickly.
Moving into Telecommunications
Grupo Salinas continued to grow in 2003. It bought a telecommunications company called Iusacell. It also bought a mobile phone company named Unefón. Telecommunications are all about how people communicate over distances, like with phones and the internet.
Later, in 2014, Iusacell was sold to AT&T. It was then renamed AT&T Mexico. Unefón was also sold to AT&T Mexico.
In March 2019, Grupo Salinas invested money in a company called OneWeb. OneWeb is working on building a network of satellites in space. These satellites are designed to provide internet services to people all over the world. This investment helped OneWeb raise a lot of money to build its system.
