The Guáitara River (Spanish: Río Guáitara) is an important river in Colombia. It is a major branch, also called a tributary, of the Patía River. This river is well-known for flowing past the amazing Las Lajas Sanctuary. This famous church is built right over a deep canyon.

Where the Guáitara River Starts and Flows
The Guáitara River begins its journey high up. It starts near the border between Ecuador and Colombia. Specifically, it flows from the sides of the Chiles Volcano. At first, the river flows towards the east.
Guáitara River's Path to the Patía
Later, the Guáitara River turns and flows north. It continues its path until it joins the Patía River. When the river is in Ecuador, it is known by a different name. There, people call it the Carchi River.
River's Surroundings: Dry Forests
In its lower parts, the Guáitara River flows through a special area. This area is called the Patía Valley dry forests ecoregion. An ecoregion is a large area of land or water. It has its own unique plants, animals, and climate.
