History of Guática
Guática was first founded in 1537 by Don Ruy de Vanegas, who was a lieutenant (a military officer) working for Sebastián de Belalcázar. A priest named Esteban de Guevara also helped with the founding. The town got its name from Cacique Guática, who was an important leader in the Santa Maria Valley.
Many people also consider March 8, 1627, as another important founding date. This was when Lesmes de Espinoza y Saravia, representing the Royal court of Spain, made an official decision about the town.
Around 1860, people from the Antioquia region founded a new town nearby. This town later became known as San Clemente, Risaralda.
Guática's Changing Status
In 1868, Guática became a corregimiento, which is a small local administrative area. It was part of the District of Quinchía and was called Nazareth. Later, in 1892, the District of Nazareth was created, and Guática became its main town. In 1905, the name of Nazareth was changed to San Clemente.
Finally, on April 22, 1921, Guática was officially declared a municipio (a larger administrative area, like a county). San Clemente became its main town.
