A Look Back in Time: History of Guadahortuna
Guadahortuna has been home to people for a very long time. Even before written history, people lived here.
The Name and Early Days
During the time of Moorish rule in Spain, called Al-Andalus, the town got its name. "Guadahortuna" means "River of fortune." At this time, it was a border area. Christian soldiers would often come into this region. They sometimes bothered the people living there.
Becoming Part of Christian Spain
In 1486, Christian forces won a big victory over the Moors. After this, Queen Isabella I of Castile helped new Christian families move to Guadahortuna.
Gaining Independence
For a while, starting in 1492, Guadahortuna was part of the larger city of Granada. But in 1557, the people of Guadahortuna wanted to be independent. They gathered money from everyone to buy their freedom.

Guadahortuna is located in the northeast part of the Province of Granada. It shares borders with several other towns and a different province.

To the north, Guadahortuna is next to the province of Jaén. To the east, it borders the town of Alamedilla. To the south, you'll find Torre-Cardela and Píñar. To the west, it's next to Montejícar and Iznalloz.
Mountains and Hills
The highest point in Guadahortuna is Torrecilla's Hill. It stands tall at 1,227 meters (about 4,026 feet). This hill is in an area known as La Atalaya. Other important hills in the area include Altos del Navazuelo, Vergara, Arrieros' Hill, and Vertientes' Hill. The town itself sits in a valley, which is named Guadahortuna's valley.
The Guadahortuna River
The Guadahortuna River starts in the town of Montejícar. It then flows through Guadahortuna, Alamedilla, Alicún de Ortega, and Dehesas de Guadix. Finally, it joins the Guadiana Menor river. From where it starts to where it ends, the river travels about 52 kilometers (around 32 miles).
