Guananico is a town in the Dominican Republic. It is located in the Puerto Plata Province. The town covers an area of about 58 square kilometers (22 square miles).
In 2012, Guananico had a population of 8,954 people. About 3,025 of these people lived in the town itself. The rest lived in the countryside around the town. Guananico is the youngest and smallest town in the Puerto Plata province. It also has the smallest population among the eight cities in the province.
History of Guananico
The name Guananico comes from an old native language. Some stories say it is linked to Guacanagarix. He was a powerful chief from the 1400s on the island of Hispaniola.
People believe the town of Guananico was started between 1865 and 1870. This was around the time when Pedro Santana was involved in Spain taking over the Dominican Republic in 1861.
What Guananico Does for a Living
Most people in Guananico work in agriculture. They grow crops like coffee and cocoa. They also plant smaller amounts of kidney beans, corn, and watermelons.
The area has many fruit trees. You can find avocados, mangoes, bitter oranges, regular oranges, and tamarinds.
Farmers use about 3,312.5 hectares (8,185 acres) of land. This land is best for growing cocoa, coffee, and fruits like guineos (a type of banana). They also grow yuccas and other citrus fruits.
Guananico also has many farm animals. There are around 15,000 cattle and pigs in the area.
Many people in Guananico also sell oranges. Others work in small businesses like moto concho services. These are motorcycle taxis that help people get around. Some people work in public transportation or tourism.
