The History of Guarambaré
How Guarambaré Got Its Name
The name Guarambaré comes from a Guaraní tribe. This tribe lived in the North-Eastern part of Paraguay. They were there when the Spanish first arrived in the 16th century.
Early Settlements and Missions
Between 1580 and 1600, a special kind of settlement was started. It was called a "Franciscan reduction." These reductions were created by Franciscan priests. They helped to gather indigenous people into communities. This helped to teach them about Christianity and European ways of life.
The first reduction was in the area that is now the Concepción Department. This was south of the Aquidabán River.
Moving to a New Home
Over time, the original reduction was moved. In 1673, it found its current home. This new location is south-east of Asunción, the capital city of Paraguay. This move helped the community to grow and develop into the town we know today.
