Club History
How the Club Started
The club was founded on October 1, 1998. It was first named Guaratinguetá Esporte Clube. Doctor Mário Augusto Rodrigues Nunes, also known as Marinho, was one of the founders.
In November 1999, a group called Consórcio de Guaratinguetá was formed. They worked with C.S.R Futebol e Marketing to manage the club. This company was owned by Carlos Arini and famous football players César Sampaio and Rivaldo.
Later that month, the club joined the São Paulo Football Federation. They started playing in the Campeonato Paulista Série B2 the next year.
Changes in Ownership
In 2002, the Consórcio de Guaratinguetá stopped its work. The club then became owned by Odário Mardegan Durães and Elmiro Aparecido de Faria.
Since 2004, Sony Alberto Douer owned the club. In 2005, he and Carlos Arini started a company called Sony Sports. This company was created to manage the club. Later, Clementino Bolan and Gustavo Gazzolla joined Sony Sports. The club then changed its name to Guaratinguetá Futebol. It became a limited company at this time.
Playing in Top Leagues
In 2006, Guaratinguetá played well in the Campeonato Paulista Série A2. They reached the semifinal stage. Even though they were eliminated, they finished second in their group. This meant they were promoted to the Campeonato Paulista Série A1 for the next year.
In 2007, the club played in the Campeonato Paulista Série A1 for the first time. Their first game was against São Caetano. Guaratinguetá lost 2–0 at the Anacleto Campanella stadium.
Moving Cities
On October 15, 2010, the club announced a big change. They moved from Guaratinguetá to Americana. They also changed their name to Americana Futebol.
However, this move did not last long. On November 28, 2011, Sony Sports announced the team's return. The club moved back to Guaratinguetá. They wanted to play in the 2012 Campeonato Paulista and other games there. The city of Americana and its main stadium, Estádio Décio Vitta, could not support two clubs. Also, most of Guaratinguetá's fans lived in their original city.
