What is the Guardian Council?
The Guardian Council is a powerful group in Iran. It acts like a special watchdog for the country's laws. Its main goal is to make sure that everything the government does follows Islamic principles.
Checking New Laws
When Iran's parliament, called the Majlis, passes a new law, it doesn't become official right away. First, the Guardian Council reviews it. They check if the law agrees with the Constitution of Iran and Islamic law. If they find any problems, they can send the law back to the parliament to be changed.
Who is in the Council?
The Guardian Council has 12 members. Half of these members are Islamic religious experts. They are chosen by Iran's Supreme Leader. The other half are lawyers. These lawyers are suggested by the head of the judiciary and approved by the parliament.
When was it Formed?
The Guardian Council was set up in 1979. This was right after the Iranian Revolution. The revolution changed Iran into an Islamic Republic. The Council was created to make sure the new government followed Islamic teachings.
What Else Does it Do?
Besides checking laws, the Guardian Council has other important jobs.
Overseeing Elections
The Council also plays a big role in elections. Before people can run for president or parliament, the Guardian Council must approve them. They check if candidates are qualified and follow Islamic and revolutionary values.
Protecting the Constitution
The Guardian Council also makes sure that the country's constitution is followed. They can interpret the constitution, which means explaining what its rules mean. This helps keep the government working correctly.
