History of GMG
How the Company Started
The company began in 1907 as Manchester Guardian Ltd. This happened when C.P. Scott bought The Manchester Guardian newspaper. That newspaper had actually started much earlier, in 1821.
Later, in 1924, the company bought the Manchester Evening News. Its name changed to Manchester Guardian and Evening News Ltd. After some time, the morning paper changed its name, so the company became Guardian and Manchester Evening News Ltd. The company got its current name, Guardian Media Group plc, in 1993.
Ventures and Sales
In 1991, GMG joined a group of companies. This group included London Weekend Television and The Walt Disney Company. They worked together to create a new breakfast TV show called GMTV.
GMG also published a magazine called Guardian Monthly. It shared articles from The Guardian and The Observer with people around the world. The magazine started in 2006 but stopped being published in 2007. The company decided it was not the right time for a global magazine.
GMG has sold parts of its business over the years. In 2007, they sold almost half of Trader Media Group. They also bought a business-to-business company called Emap with a partner.
In 2010, GMG sold its local newspaper division. This included the Manchester Evening News. This sale changed the long connection between The Guardian and Manchester. In 2012, GMG also sold its radio stations, including Real Radio and Smooth Radio.
Leadership Changes
Many important people have led Guardian Media Group. Carolyn McCall was the chief executive from 2006 to 2010. She then became the chief executive of EasyJet. Andrew Miller took over from her until 2015, followed by David Pemsel.
In 2017, GMG started a new fund called GMG Ventures LP. This fund invests in new businesses. It focuses on companies that are developing new media technology. This helps GMG financially and supports its future plans.
In 2020, Annette Thomas became the new chief executive. She had a lot of experience in publishing and science. She replaced David Pemsel. In 2021, Annette Thomas left the company.
In 2022, Anna Bateson was appointed as the new chief executive.
How GMG is Organized
Core Business
GMG's main business is Guardian News & Media Limited. This part of the company publishes theguardian.com website. It also publishes The Guardian and The Observer newspapers. This division started in 1967 and got its current name in 2006.
Investments and Support
The group has different investments to help support its journalism. These include:
- Ascential: This is a company that provides digital information and organizes events for businesses.
- An investment fund managed by other experts.
The main goal of Guardian Media Group is to support its owner, Scott Trust Limited. This trust makes sure The Guardian newspaper can always be independent. In 2014, The Guardian started a membership plan. This allows readers to support the newspaper without needing to pay to read articles. This plan has been very successful. By 2018, over 1 million people had subscribed or donated. The newspaper aimed to make enough money to cover its costs by 2019, which it achieved.
