History of Guarne
Early Inhabitants and Explorers
The first people to live in the Guarne area were the Tahamíes Indians. They came from the Nare River region. In 1541, a Spanish explorer named Alvaro Mendoza arrived in Guarne. He was looking for gold, but he did not find any. So, he went back to the Aburrá Valley.
Searching for Gold and New Settlers
Later, in 1640, two other explorers, Captain Fernando del Toro Zapata and Diego Beltran del Castillo, came to Guarne. They were also searching for gold. The first non-native people who settled in Guarne were enslaved individuals.
Becoming a Township
For some time, Guarne was part of a nearby town called Rionegro. However, in 1814, a leader named Juan del Corral officially created Guarne as its own township. This meant it became its own separate community.
