Guarnizo is a small village located in the municipality of El Astillero in Cantabria, Spain. In 2010, about 4,463 people lived there.
A Look at Guarnizo's Economy
Guarnizo and the nearby town of El Astillero have a long history with shipbuilding. The name "El Astillero" actually means "the shipyard" in Spanish!
Shipbuilding in the Past
Long ago, this area was famous for building ships. A very important ship called the Princesa was built here between 1730 and 1731. This was a large warship for the Spanish Navy. It was later captured by the British and renamed HMS Princess.
Modern Shipyard Activities
Today, there is still a shipyard close to Guarnizo called Astilleros de Santander. However, it doesn't build new ships from scratch anymore. Instead, it focuses on repairing, changing, and upgrading existing ships.
