El Astillero (which means "The Shipyard" in English) is a town and a municipality in northern Spain. It is part of the Cantabria region. This town is very close to Santander, which is the capital city of Cantabria.
El Astillero is famous for its shipyard, where ships are built and repaired. It is also well-known for hosting the Spanish national Rowing Championships. The town's location is special because it is surrounded by estuaries, which are places where rivers meet the sea.
The town is located at the foot of a hill called Peña Cabarga. It is about 7.5 kilometers away from Santander and sits 20 meters above sea level. The area where the rivers meet the bay creates large wetlands. These wetlands are important homes for many different kinds of migratory birds throughout the year. The municipality covers an area of about 6.80 square kilometers.
