Gugingin clan facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Gugigin clan were one of the many important groups of Yugambeh people. They were an Indigenous community from the Logan area in Queensland, Australia. The Yugambeh people had nine main family groups, and the Gugigin were one of them.

What's in a Name?

The name Gugigin comes from a Yugambeh word, Gugin. This word means "north." The part -gin means "people." So, Gugigin means "Northern People." This makes sense because they were the most northern group of the Yugambeh people.

Their Language

The Gugigin people spoke their own special way of talking. It was a dialect, or a local version, of the main Yugambeh language.

To the north, their lands included Mount Cotton. Eastward, their territory extended to Russell Island and the surrounding areas. They lived along the Logan River, north of the Mununjali clan. They were also north of the Wangerriburra clan, who lived in the Albert Valley.
