A Look at the Library Building

The Guilford Memorial Library sits on a small hill. From here, you can see the Piscataquis River. The building has one main floor and is made of brick. It has a special roof called a hip roof, covered with slate.

Cool Architectural Details

The library stands on a raised stone base. The front of the building has a part that sticks out a little. This part has a pointed roof and covers the main entrance. The entrance itself is set back inside a rounded archway. On each side of the entrance, there are two windows with rounded tops and stone ledges. The corners of the building have decorative brick columns. There are also fancy brick patterns and wooden decorations under the roof. This style is called Renaissance Revival. It means the building looks like old European buildings from the Renaissance period.

How the Library Started

The idea for the Guilford library began in 1900. At first, people had to pay a small fee to use the books. Soon, people in the town started raising money to build a proper library.

The library was designed by an architect named Frank A. Patterson from Bangor, Maine. This library is the only one he is known to have designed. It's a special example of Renaissance Revival style architecture in the local area.
