Sidney Selby (born July 28, 1931 – died September 23, 2020) was an American blues singer and guitarist. He was best known by his stage name, "Guitar Crusher." For many years, he lived and performed in Berlin, Germany. He was mostly a singer, known for his powerful voice, but he also played the guitar and harmonica.

Life and Music Career

Sidney Selby was born in a place called Lake Landing, in Hyde County, North Carolina. When he was a schoolboy, he sang gospel music in church and on the radio. This was how he started his journey in music.

When he was 15, Sidney moved to New York to live with his mother. There, he started his own band called The Midnight Rockers. They played music in colleges and clubs around New York. In the 1960s, he began recording many songs called singles. He also went on tours with famous musicians like Ben E. King and The Isley Brothers.

In 1982, Sidney Selby moved to Berlin, Germany. He quickly became very popular there. With a new group of Midnight Rockers, he performed in clubs and at big music festivals all over Europe. Their shows included his own songs, along with classic rhythm and blues (R&B) and soul music. He worked with many other talented musicians during his recordings and live concerts.

Sidney was first known as "Bone Crusher." But his name changed to "Guitar Crusher" after a funny story. During one of his shows, he accidentally broke his guitar over a customer's head! Because of this, people started calling him "Guitar Crusher." The newspapers in Germany often called him a "living legend" because he was so respected.

Sidney Selby was married to Mara von Hartz-Selby. You might know his grandson, who is the famous rapper Desiigner.
