Gukanshō (愚管抄) is an important Japanese book about the country's history. It was written around the year 1220 by a Buddhist priest named Jien.
In Gukanshō, Jien wrote about the lives of the Japanese emperors. He also described political and military conflicts. These included disagreements within the royal court and with groups outside it.
What's Inside the Gukanshō?
The Gukanshō is divided into seven main parts, called volumes.
- Volumes 1 and 2: These volumes tell the story of the emperors. They start with Emperor Jimmu, who was the first legendary emperor. They continue up to Emperor Juntoku.
- Volumes 3 to 6: These parts offer a deeper look at history. Jien shares his thoughts and ideas about why events happened.
- Volume 7: This final part gives a quick summary of everything discussed in the book.
