The Gulngai were an Aboriginal Australian people. They lived in the tropical rainforests of Queensland. It is important not to confuse them with another Aboriginal group called the Kuringgai.

Their Language

The Gulngai people spoke a language called Gulŋay. This language was a dialect of Dyirbal. Dyirbal is part of a larger group of languages known as Dyirbalic languages.

Where They Lived

The traditional lands of the Gulngai people covered about 518 square kilometers (200 square miles). Their homeland was located around the Tully River and the Murray River. This area was below Tully Falls. The southern edge of their territory was near the ranges above Kirrama National Park. A well-known researcher, Norman Tindale, helped map these traditional lands.
