Gumboro is a small, unincorporated community in Sussex County, Delaware, United States. Being "unincorporated" means it doesn't have its own local government, like a mayor or town council. Instead, it's managed by the county government.
In 2006, there was a plan to make Gumboro an official town. The Delaware General Assembly (which is like the state's law-making group) passed a law to do this. However, the governor at the time, Ruth Ann Minner, stopped the plan. She didn't approve it because there wasn't a clear plan for how the town would be governed right away. This meant there would be a time when the community wouldn't have a local government if it became a town too quickly.
Gumboro Disease
Gumboro is famous for something important in the world of chickens! In 1962, a special virus was first found here. This virus is called the Infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV). Because it was discovered in Gumboro, the illness it causes is often called Gumboro disease.
This disease affects chickens and makes their immune system weak. This means it's harder for them to fight off other sicknesses. Young chickens, usually under two weeks old, might have the virus without showing many signs. Older chickens, over two weeks old, are more likely to get sick and show clear signs of the disease.
Community Life
Gumboro has a community center located along Millsboro Highway. This building used to be a school house, where kids in the area went to learn. The community is also home to Bayshore Community Church. This church is quite large compared to other churches in the surrounding area.
Another important building in Gumboro is the West Woods Methodist Episcopal Church. This church was recognized for its historical importance in 2007. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places, which is a list of places in the United States that are worth preserving because of their history.
