Gunhilde facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Gunhilde (also spelled Gunnhild) was a woman from Denmark who lived a long time ago. She died on November 13, 1002. People believe she was the sister of Sweyn Forkbeard, who was the King of Denmark. She was also thought to be the daughter of Harald Bluetooth, another famous Danish king.

Gunhilde was married to a man named Pallig. He was also from Denmark and worked for the King of England, Æthelred the Unready. Pallig was an important leader, like a governor, in a part of England called Devonshire.

A Difficult Time in England

Gunhilde was living in England, possibly as a special guest or a "hostage" (someone kept to ensure peace). Sadly, she was killed during a terrible event called the St. Brice's Day massacre. King Æthelred ordered this event.

What happened to Pallig, Gunhilde's husband, is a bit unclear. Some stories say he was also killed during this event. Other stories suggest he might have caused the massacre by leaving King Æthelred's service.

Was Gunhilde Real?

Historians, who are people who study the past, have different ideas about whether Gunhilde was really Sweyn Forkbeard's sister.

  • Some historians, like Ryan Lavelle, are not sure about the old stories that mention her. They think these stories, written much later, might not be completely accurate.
  • Another historian, Ann Williams, points out that only one old writer, William of Malmesbury, mentions Gunhilde. She believes the story might be a myth and that Gunhilde might not have existed at all.

However, other historians, like Frank Stenton, think the story of Gunhilde is a "well recorded tradition." He believed that Sweyn Forkbeard wanted to get revenge for Gunhilde's death. This desire for revenge might have been a big reason why Sweyn invaded England in 1003. Later, Sweyn's son, Cnut, eventually took over England.
