A Look at the Gunther Brewery Buildings
The Gunther Brewing Company site has many different buildings. The oldest and main part is a large, five-story brick building. It was designed in the Romanesque Revival style, which means it looks strong and grand.
How the Brewery Grew Over Time
Around 1910, a two-story ice plant was added. This was important for keeping the beer cool. There were also boiler rooms, which helped power the factory. As the company grew, more brew houses were built. New sections were added in 1936 and again in 1950.
From Beer to Sauces: The Tulkoff Factory
Later, around 1964, another factory was built on the property. This was for the Tulkoff company. They made sauce products there. This shows how the site changed over the years.
The Story of Gunther Brewing Company
The George Gunther, Jr. Brewing Company started in 1900. It quickly became a big name in Baltimore. Baltimore was a major center for making beer in America.
Gunther's Success and Growth
By 1959, Gunther Brewing Company was very successful. It was the second largest brewery in Baltimore. Each year, it produced 800,000 barrels of beer. About 600 people worked there, making it an important employer.
Changes in Ownership and Closure
In 1960, the Hamm's Brewing Company bought Gunther. Later, it became part of Miller Brewing Company. Just three years later, in 1963, the brand was sold again. The F. & M. Schaefer Brewing Company took over. Sadly, the Gunther plant in Canton closed down in 1978. After brewing stopped, the Tulkoff company used the factory for a short time to make their sauces.
What Happened to the Brewery Buildings?
After the brewery closed, some parts of the buildings were taken down. This was done to save materials. But the main parts of the old brewery were kept.
The Gunther: A New Life for Old Buildings
Today, the former brewery has a new purpose. It has been turned into a modern, mixed-use building. This means it has different kinds of spaces, like apartments and businesses. It is now called "The Gunther." This is similar to how other old buildings in Canton have been updated.
A Historic Landmark: National Register of Historic Places
The Gunther Brewing Company was recognized as a special place in 2002. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This list is kept by the National Park Service. It helps protect important historic sites in the United States.
