A Look Back: Gunyidi's History
Gunyidi started as a small stop along the Midland Railway. This railway was important for moving goods and people across the region. In 1906, it was first known as Siberia Fettlers Camp. A "fettlers camp" was a place where railway workers, called fettlers, lived while they built or maintained the train tracks.
The name of the camp soon changed to Gunnyidi. In 1930, the area was officially declared a town. Later, in 1973, the spelling of the town's name was changed to its current form, Gunyidi.
Where Did the Name Come From?
The name Gunyidi has Aboriginal roots. It comes from a longer name, Mungerdegunyidie. This was the name of a nearby well. A well is a deep hole dug into the ground to reach water. The name Gunyidi is a shorter version of this original Aboriginal name.
