Dalwallinu (/ˈdlwɒlɪnju/ or /dælˈwɒlənju/), often called Dally, is a town in Western Australia. It is located in the Wheatbelt region. This area is about 248 kilometers (154 miles) north-northeast of Perth. The main jobs in Dalwallinu are in farming and related businesses. It's also the first town you reach on the Wildflower Way. This is a special tourist route that goes north to Mullewa. In 2016, Dalwallinu had 699 people living there.

What's in a Name?

The name Dalwallinu comes from an old Aboriginal word. No one knows the exact word today. But it is thought to mean "place to wait a while" or "good lands." Long ago, the Badimaya people lived in the northern part of the area. The Karlamaya people lived in the southern parts.

Early Days and Settlers

The town was first called South Nugadong. It officially became Dalwallinu in 1914. The first Europeans to arrive were Benedictine monks. They came from New Norcia to let their sheep graze. This happened on land they had leased.

The first settlers arrived in 1907. They hoped to grow wheat in the area. The land was surveyed in 1909. Then, it was opened for people to choose their own plots in 1910. Farmers started planting crops soon after.

The Billum Billum Well

In 1909, two brothers, Albert and Frederick Ellison, built a well. It was at the southern end of the town. This well was very important. It gave settlers a steady supply of water. The well was named Billum Billum well. It was built using local timber. This included trees like gimlet and salmon gum.

Railways and Grain

In 1932, the Wheat Pool of Western Australia made an announcement. They said Dalwallinu would get two grain elevators. These were large storage buildings for grain. Each elevator would have an engine. They were built next to the railway line.

Dalwallinu is on a railway line. This line used to carry trains from Northam to Mullewa. These services included a train called The Mullewa. However, these trains no longer run. The railway line is not used between Dalwallinu and Perenjori South.

Weather in Dalwallinu

Dalwallinu has a warm climate. Summers are hot and dry. Winters are mild with some rain. The hottest month is usually January. The coolest month is July. The town gets most of its rain in the winter months.
