Gurmit Singh, born on March 24, 1965, is a famous Singaporean actor, comedian, and host. He was a full-time artist with Mediacorp, a big media company, from 1994 to 2014. Gurmit is most famous for playing the main character, Phua Chu Kang, in the TV shows Phua Chu Kang Pte Ltd and Phua Chu Kang Sdn Bhd, and also in Phua Chu Kang The Movie. For his funny acting as Phua Chu Kang, he won the Best Actor (Comedy) award at the Asian Television Awards five times!

About Gurmit Singh's Life
Gurmit was born in Singapore. His father is a Sikh Indian from the Punjabi group, and his mother has Chinese and Japanese roots. He grew up following the Sikh religion but later became a Christian in 1985. Gurmit went to Outram Secondary School when he was a teenager.
In 1995, Gurmit married Melissa Wong, who is Cantonese Chinese. They have three children: Gabrielle, born in 1997; Elliot, born in 2002; and Mikaela, born in 2013. Gurmit was also part of the National Police Cadet Corps (NPCC) when he was younger.
Gurmit speaks English very well because of his mixed family background. He also speaks Malay fluently. He learned Malay as his main language in both primary and secondary school.
Gurmit Singh's Career Highlights
Gurmit started his career in 1994 on a TV show called Live on 5. Soon after, he got his own sketch comedy sitcom called Gurmit's World. In the second season of Gurmit's World in 1995, he played different 'relatives', and that's when the character Phua Chu Kang first appeared. Phua Chu Kang was a funny general contractor.
The character Phua Chu Kang became super popular! He got his own TV show called Phua Chu Kang Pte Ltd in 1997. This show used a special way of speaking English called Singlish, which made Gurmit famous not just in Singapore, but also in nearby countries like Malaysia. Because of this, another show, Phua Chu Kang Sdn Bhd, was made in Malaysia from 2009 to 2010.
In 2013, Gurmit was nominated for a Best Actor award for his role in Phua Chu Kang The Movie. This award was for Chinese-language films made in Malaysia. In October 2014, the Madame Tussauds museum in Singapore even made a wax figure of Phua Chu Kang!
In November 2014, Gurmit decided to take a break from being a full-time TV star after 20 years. He wanted to spend more time with his family and choose only special projects to work on. In August 2020, Phua Chu Kang became the first Singaporean brand ambassador for Shopee, a popular online shopping company.
