Gus MacPherson's Playing Career
Starting at Rangers and Loan to Exeter
Gus MacPherson began his football journey as a young player at Rangers. This is one of Scotland's biggest clubs. However, he found it hard to get a regular spot in their main team.
During this time, he spent some time on loan at Exeter City. A loan means a player temporarily plays for another club.
Success with Kilmarnock
In 1991, MacPherson moved to Kilmarnock. This was a very successful period for him. He became a key player for the team.
He played over 350 games for Kilmarnock. He was also part of the team that won the Scottish Cup in 1997. They beat Falkirk 1–0 in the final.
Moving to Dunfermline and St Mirren
After his time at Kilmarnock, MacPherson joined Dunfermline Athletic in 2001. He played there for two seasons.
In 2003, he moved to St Mirren. At St Mirren, he took on a new role as a player and assistant manager.
Gus MacPherson's Managerial Career
Leading St Mirren to Success
Gus MacPherson became the player/manager of St Mirren in December 2003. He stopped playing at the end of the 2003–04 season to focus only on managing the team.
In the 2004–05 season, he led St Mirren to a much better finish. They came in second place, a big improvement from seventh the year before.
The next season, 2005–06, was even better. MacPherson guided St Mirren to win the First Division, which meant they were promoted to the Scottish Premier League.
He also led them to win the Scottish League Challenge Cup that same season. This made him the only St Mirren manager to win two major trophies in one season, known as a domestic double.
In the 2006–07 season, St Mirren stayed in the SPL. They managed to avoid being relegated (moved down to a lower league).
The team secured their spot in the SPL with a 3–2 win over Motherwell. This result also meant that one of MacPherson's old clubs, Dunfermline, was relegated.
In the 2007–08 season, St Mirren faced money challenges. Despite this, MacPherson kept them in the SPL, finishing 10th. This was their highest finish since the 1990–91 season.
During the 2008–09 season, he led St Mirren to a big win against Rangers. He also received the SPL manager of the month award in December 2008.
He guided the team to the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup, beating Celtic 1–0 in the quarter-finals. St Mirren stayed in the top league that season by a very small margin.
In January 2010, MacPherson became the longest-serving manager in the SPL. However, St Mirren announced they had parted ways with him on May 11, 2010.
Managing Queen of the South
In June 2011, MacPherson became the new manager of Queen of the South. He signed a one-year contract with the club.
His time there ended in April 2012 when the team was relegated to the Second Division.
Time at Queen's Park
MacPherson was appointed manager of Scottish League Two side Queen's Park in January 2014.
In his second full season, he led the team to promotion to Scottish League One. They won their promotion through the play-offs, beating Clyde.
Queen's Park played two seasons in the third tier before being relegated again in May 2018. MacPherson left Queen's Park in September 2018. He then became the technical director at St Mirren until August 2020.
Short Spell at Greenock Morton
In March 2021, MacPherson was named manager of Scottish Championship team Greenock Morton. He was there until the end of the 2020–21 season.
He helped the team avoid relegation by winning the play-offs in May 2021. MacPherson left Greenock Morton in December 2021.
