Sir Guylford Slingsby (1565–1631) was an important person who worked for the English government. He became the Comptroller of the Navy. This was a big job that helped manage the country's naval forces. Sir Guylford was also known for having several very successful children.
Who Was Sir Guylford Slingsby?
Sir Guylford Slingsby was born in 1565. His family lived in a place called Scriven in North Yorkshire, England. He was the eighth son of Sir Francis Slingsby and Mary Percy. Mary's family was well-known, including her brothers, the Earls of Northumberland. Many of Guylford's brothers died young. However, his older brothers, Sir Henry Slingsby and Sir William Slingsby, lived to be important people too.
In 1611, Sir Guylford Slingsby got a very important job. He was made the Comptroller of the Navy. Think of the Comptroller as a chief manager for the navy. This person was in charge of making sure the navy had enough ships, supplies, and money. It was a big responsibility to help keep England's navy strong.
From 1618 to 1628, a group of people called a commission took over the Comptroller's duties. But in 1628, Sir Guylford took back his role. He continued to serve as Comptroller until he passed away in 1631. During this time, he lived in a place called Bifrons in Canterbury.
His Family and Famous Children
Sir Guylford Slingsby married Margaret Walter from York. They had eight sons, and most of them grew up to be adults. They also had four daughters. Margaret was still living in York in 1650. At that time, her son Robert had to pay a special fine to keep some of the family's land. This was common for families who had supported the King during the English Civil War.
Several of Guylford's children became famous in their own right:
- Guildford Slingsby was a member of the Irish House of Commons. This means he helped make laws in Ireland. He was also a trusted helper to a very important leader named Thomas Wentworth.
- Sir Robert Slingsby, 1st Baronet followed in his father's footsteps. He also became the Comptroller of the Navy. He was a close friend of Samuel Pepys, who wrote famous diaries about life in England.
- Sir Arthur Slingsby was the first of the Slingsby baronets of Bifrons. He was the only one of Guylford's sons to have children himself.
- Walter Slingsby was a brave soldier. He fought with great courage during the English Civil War.
Guylford and Margaret's daughters also lived interesting lives:
- Dorothy married Geoffrey Nightingale. She helped her brother Robert with his family land in 1650.
- Anne married John Caesar. He was the grandson of a famous judge named Sir Julius Caesar. Anne and John had five children. Later in her life, Anne faced hard times. In 1684, she asked the Archbishop of Canterbury for help.
