Guácimo is a district in the Guácimo canton. It is part of the Limón province in Costa Rica. This area is a rural town located on the east coast of the country. It is well-known for its many banana and pineapple farms.

What's in a Name?
Guácimo gets its name from a special tree called the Guacimo tree (Guazuma ulmifolia). This tree grows very fast and is found all over Central America.
A Look at History
Guácimo was officially created on June 26, 1971.
The town started to grow in the 1880s because of a new railway. This railway was built by workers from the West Indies for Minor Cooper Keith. He built a line called the "Old Line" that went through Guácimo. Later, the railway plans changed, and a different route was built to San José.

Guácimo covers an area of about 223.27 square kilometers. It is located about 114 meters above sea level.

In 2011, a census showed that Guácimo had 18,326 people living there.
For a long time, many families in Guácimo had English last names. These names include Abrams, Anderson, Bailey, and Williams, among many others. This shows that many people from the West Indies, who spoke English, settled in Guácimo throughout its history.
Learning in Guácimo
The town's elementary school is called Manuel María Gutiérrez. When it first opened in 1914, it was an English-speaking school. Guácimo is also home to EARTH University. This is a private university that teaches about agriculture and farming.
Getting Around
Trains and Bridges
Guácimo has an old railroad bridge that was built in 1905. It is the oldest standing railroad bridge in the Atlantic Zone of Costa Rica. On the other side of this bridge is Africa, which used to be a bigger town than Guácimo.
