Early Political Career
Gwen Margolis began her career in the Florida House of Representatives. This is where lawmakers meet to create new laws for the state. She served three terms there, from 1974 to 1980.
After her time in the House, she moved to the Florida Senate. She served in the Senate for three different periods. Her first time was from 1980 to 1992.
Leading the Florida Senate
In 1990, Gwen Margolis made history. She became the President of the Florida Senate. This means she was the leader of the Senate. She was the very first woman to hold this important position. She led the Senate until 1992.
After State Government
After 1992, Gwen Margolis tried to get a job in the United States Congress. This is a national government job, but she did not win the election.
She then became a County Commissioner for Miami-Dade County. A County Commissioner helps make decisions for a local area. She worked in this role until she returned to the State Senate.
Running for Property Appraiser
In 2008, Gwen Margolis ran for a different local job. She wanted to be the Property Appraiser for Miami-Dade County. This person helps decide how much properties are worth for taxes.
She got the most votes in the first election. However, she needed more than half of all the votes to win. Because she didn't get enough, she had to have a second election, called a runoff. She lost this runoff election.
Return to the Florida Senate
Gwen Margolis ran for the Florida Senate again in 2010. She won the Democratic Party's nomination. This meant her party chose her to be their candidate. She then won the main election.
She served in the Senate for her third time from 2010 to 2016. In 2016, she decided not to run for re-election. This was because the areas for voting (called districts) were changed. She then retired from politics.
Gwen Margolis was married to Allan Margolis. She had four children. She passed away in 2020, leaving behind a legacy as a pioneering woman in Florida politics.
