Gwin is a small, unincorporated community located in Holmes County, Mississippi. An unincorporated community is a place where people live that doesn't have its own local government, like a city or town. Gwin is found along U.S. Highway 49E, just south of a town called Tchula.
Long ago, Gwin was a very important stop for trains on the Illinois Central Railroad.
Gwin's Train History

Gwin played a big role in the history of trains. It was a key spot where train crews would change shifts for freight trains traveling between New Orleans and Memphis. Because of this, there was even a hotel in Gwin just for the train crews to rest.
South of the community, there was a large switching yard with six tracks. This allowed trains to move from one track to another. There was also a special "wye-junction" where a train track split off and went east towards Durant.
Before refrigerators were common on trains, Gwin had a huge facility for ice. Here, large blocks of ice were loaded onto trains. This ice kept perishable goods, like food, fresh during long journeys. However, in 1986, the railway changed its crew change point to McComb, which changed Gwin's role in the railway system.
