Morinda jasminoides A.Cunn.

Gynochthodes jasminoides is a plant that can grow in two ways: it can be a woody climber, like a vine that uses other plants for support, or a scrambling shrub, which is a bushy plant that spreads out. It belongs to the Rubiaceae family, which includes many well-known plants like coffee! You can find this plant growing along the northern and eastern coasts of Australia. It lives in several Australian states and territories, including Western Australia, the Northern Territory, Queensland, Victoria, and New South Wales.

How It Got Its Name

Scientists use a system called taxonomy to name and group all living things. This helps them understand how different plants and animals are related.

The Gynochthodes jasminoides plant was first officially described in 1834 by a botanist named Allan Cunningham. He gave it the name Morinda jasminoides.

However, science is always learning new things! In 2011, new studies looked closely at the DNA of plants. These "molecular studies" helped scientists understand the true relationships between different plant groups. Because of this new information, the groups (called genera) named Morinda and Gynochthodes were re-examined.

This meant that Morinda jasminoides was found to be a better fit in the Gynochthodes group. So, scientists Sylvain Razafimandimbison and Birgitta Bremer officially changed its name to Gynochthodes jasminoides. This new name helps show its correct place in the plant family tree.
