Gyrth Godwinson facts for kids

Gyrth Godwinson (born around 1032 – died 14 October 1066) was an important English nobleman. He was the fourth son of Earl Godwin. This made him a younger brother of Harold Godwinson, who later became King of England.
In 1051, Gyrth went into exile in Flanders with his older brother Sweyn. However, unlike Sweyn, Gyrth was able to come back to England with his family the next year. He was with his brothers Harold and Tostig when their father passed away.
Gyrth's Life and Role
After his father died in April 1053, the Godwinson family kept their strong position in England. Harold became the Earl of Wessex. This made him the second most powerful person in the country, right after the king.
Gyrth was made the Earl of East Anglia. He also became Earl of Cambridgeshire and Oxfordshire between 1055 and 1057. With his brother Leofwine also holding several earldoms, the Godwinson family controlled all of eastern England. This showed how powerful their family had become.
Advice Before Battle
Historians like Orderic Vitalis and William of Malmesbury wrote about Gyrth. They said he tried to stop Harold from fighting William of Normandy. Gyrth suggested that he should lead the English army instead. He also told Harold to stay in London to prepare for another fight. Gyrth reminded Harold about a promise he had made to William. However, Harold did not listen to Gyrth's advice.
Death in Battle
Gyrth fought bravely in the Battle of Hastings. This famous battle took place on 14 October 1066. Sadly, Gyrth was killed during the battle. He died alongside his brothers Harold and Leofwine.
