He also wrote music for newer artists. These included Miossec, Benjamin Biolay, and Abd al Malik. This shows that his music appealed to different generations.

Gérard Jouannest was married to Juliette Gréco, who was also a very famous French singer and actress. They met in the 1960s through Jacques Brel.
Jouannest was interested in politics too. In the 2012 French presidential election, he supported a politician named Jean-Luc Mélenchon.
