Härnösand Cathedral (which is Härnösands domkyrka in Swedish) is a very important church in the town of Härnösand, Sweden. It serves as the main church for the Diocese of Härnösand, which is part of the Church of Sweden. From the top of its tall, 46-meter tower, you can see the entire town of Härnösand! It is also known as Sweden's smallest cathedral.

History of Härnösand Cathedral

The very first church in Härnösand was built way back in 1593. Inside, you can still see four beautiful chandeliers that are from the 1600s! Sadly, in 1721, the church was burned down by Russian troops.

A new church was built after that, but it was also destroyed later on. The church you see today was officially opened on June 28, 1846. It was designed by an architect named Johan Adolf Hawerman. This current church stands in the exact same spot where the very first church was built centuries ago.

What's Inside the Cathedral?

Härnösand Cathedral has many interesting features inside.

  • The beautiful painting above the altar was created by an artist named David von Coln.
  • The special bowl used for baptisms, called a baptismal font, is made of silver. It's a fancy Spanish design from 1777.
  • The church's large organ was built in 1975 by a Danish company called Bruno Christensen & Sønner Orgelbyggeri. It has an amazing 57 different sounds, called "stops"! The front part of the organ, called the facade, is even older. It was saved from the 1700s organ that was in the original church.
  • The cathedral also has a set of 37 bells, called a carillon. These bells were made in 1981 by the Bergholtz Bellfoundry.
