Härnösand Cathedral (which in Swedish is Härnösands domkyrka) is a very important church in Sweden. It serves as the main church for the Diocese of Härnösand, which is part of the Church of Sweden.
You can find this cathedral in the town of Härnösand, located in Västernorrland County. If you climb to the top of its 46-meter-tall tower, you can see the whole town of Härnösand!
A Look Back in Time
The very first church in Härnösand was built a long time ago, in 1593. It had beautiful chandeliers from the 1600s. But in 1721, something sad happened. Russian troops burned the church down. A new church was built after that, but it also got destroyed later.
The church you see today is not the first one. It was officially opened on 28 June 1846. A talented architect named Johan Adolf Hawerman (who lived from 1812 to 1885) designed it. This church stands in the same spot where the very first one was. Did you know it's the smallest cathedral in Sweden?
Inside the Cathedral
The cathedral has many interesting features inside. The painting above the altar was created by an artist named David von Coln. He lived from 1689 to 1763.
Special Features
The baptismal font is a beautiful silver piece. It was made in 1777 in a fancy Spanish style called Rococo.
The large organ was built in 1975 by a Danish company. It has 57 "stops," which are like different sets of pipes that make various sounds. The front part of the organ, called the facade, is even older! It comes from a 1700s organ that was saved from the original church.
The cathedral also has a special musical instrument called a carillon. It has 37 bells! This carillon was built in 1981 by the Bergholtz Bellfoundry .
