The Hôpital du Sacré-Cœur de Montréal is a very large hospital in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It's located in the Cartierville neighborhood, right next to Saint-Laurent. This hospital is one of the biggest teaching hospitals connected with the Université de Montréal. It's also one of the largest hospitals in all of Quebec. It's special because it's one of only three hospitals in the province with a Level 1 Trauma Center. This means it can handle the most serious injuries and emergencies.

A Look at the Hospital's History

How It All Began in 1898

On June 1, 1898, a group of women in downtown Montreal started a small hospital. They named it Hôpital du Sacré-Cœur de Montréal. Their goal was to care for about a dozen people who had long-term illnesses. These patients were sometimes called "incurables" back then.

New Buildings and New Focus

In 1902, the Sisters of Providence took over running the hospital. A new building was built on Décarie Boulevard with 375 beds. It was known as Hôpital des Incurables.

Sadly, this building was destroyed by a fire in March 1923. So, in 1926, a brand new hospital was built. This new building was on Gouin Boulevard in Cartierville, where the hospital still stands today. With the new building, the hospital went back to its original name: Hôpital du Sacré-Cœur de Montréal.

Specializing in Care

The new hospital first focused on treating tuberculosis, a serious lung disease. It was like a special care center, or "sanatorium," for people with lung illnesses. It became an important place for teaching doctors about lung problems.

In 1931, a doctor named Édouard Samson started the orthopedics department. Orthopedics is the part of medicine that deals with bones and joints. This department grew to be the biggest place in Quebec for training orthopedic surgeons.

Connecting with the University

In 1973, the Hôpital du Sacré-Cœur de Montréal officially joined with the Université de Montréal. This made it a teaching hospital for medical and health sciences students. Also, the Albert-Prévost Institute merged with the hospital. This added a special center for patients needing mental health care.
