Höxter is a district, also known as a Kreis, located in the eastern part of North Rhine-Westphalia, a state in Germany. It's a beautiful area with a rich history and several interesting towns.
A Look at Höxter's History
The story of the Höxter district began a long time ago. In 1816, a new government called the Prussian government was in charge. They decided to create three separate areas, or districts, in this region. These were named Höxter, Brakel, and Warburg.
Later, in 1832, the districts of Höxter and Brakel were combined. They became one larger district, keeping the name Höxter. The district we know today was officially formed in 1975. This happened when the old Warburg district and the Höxter district merged together. At the same time, many smaller towns and villages in the area joined up. They formed the ten main cities that are part of the district today.
Understanding the Höxter Coat of Arms
Every district has a special symbol called a coat of arms. It tells a story about the area. The coat of arms for Höxter has three main parts. The pretty lily at the bottom comes from the old coat of arms of the Warburg district. You can also see this lily in the coat of arms of the city of Warburg itself.
The blue wavy line in the middle represents the Weser river. This important river flows through the district. Finally, the cross at the top comes from the coat of arms of the state of Paderborn. This area was once controlled by a powerful church leader called a bishop. Each part of the coat of arms helps to show the history and geography of the Höxter district.
