Early Life and Family

Hannah Maria George was born in Warner, New Hampshire, on October 1, 1844. Her parents were Gilman C. and Nancy Badger George. Her father, Gilman, was born in 1820 and passed away on September 12, 1894. He was involved in his community, serving as a captain in the state militia and as town clerk. Hannah Maria George Colby came from English families on both sides. She inherited her writing talent from ancestors who were connected to the famous speaker and politician Daniel Webster.

Writing Career

When H. Maria George Colby was a teenager, she started writing short novels, called novelettes. These were published in big cities like New York City and Philadelphia. As she grew older, she wrote a lot for magazines aimed at young people. She also became an expert on topics related to home and family life.

Her articles appeared in many well-known publications. Some of these included The Youth's Companion, Good Housekeeping, and St. Nicholas Magazine. For five years, she worked as the fashion editor for a magazine called "Household." Even though she used different pen names, most people knew her by her maiden name, H. Maria George. She strongly believed in the temperance movement, which worked to reduce alcohol use. She also supported equal rights for men and women. She used her writing to share these important ideas.
