HMS Cumberland was a powerful 74-gun ship of the line that served in the Royal Navy. She was built at Deptford Dockyard and launched on March 29, 1774. This type of ship was known as a "third-rate" due to its size and number of guns.

The Cumberland was involved in important naval battles against the French Navy. These battles happened both before and during the Napoleonic Wars. After many years of service, the ship was taken apart in 1804.

Early Battles and Captures

The Cumberland played a part in the Battle of Cape St Vincent in 1780. This was a major naval battle.

Around February 1781, the Cumberland captured a French privateer ship. This ship was called Duc de Chartres and had 18 guns. The Royal Navy then added this captured ship to their own fleet. They renamed it HMS Duc de Chartres.

After this, the Cumberland sailed to the East Indies. There, she took part in the Battle of Cuddalore in 1783.

Role in the Napoleonic Wars

The Cumberland was also involved in events during the Napoleonic Wars. One notable event was the action of 28 June 1803. This happened during the Blockade of Saint-Domingue.

A few days later, the Cumberland and other British ships were sailing near Jean-Rabel in the West Indies. They saw a large ship that looked like a French warship. The Cumberland and another ship, Vanguard, approached it.

After a few shots from the Vanguard, the French ship surrendered. It was the French frigate Créole, which had 44 guns. This ship was carrying a French general and 530 soldiers. The Royal Navy took control of the Créole and added it to their fleet as HMS Creole.

While the British were taking over the Créole, a small French navy schooner sailed right into the British group. This schooner was also captured. It was carrying 100 bloodhounds from Cuba. These dogs were meant to be used by the French army.

End of Service

The HMS Cumberland was taken apart in 1804. This means the ship was broken up for its materials.
