HMS Daring was a special type of warship called a torpedo boat destroyer. She was built for the Royal Navy in the late 1800s. Her sister ship was HMS HMS Decoy. These two ships were part of the Daring-class destroyers.

When Daring was tested, she was called the 'Fastest Boat Ever'. This was a big deal at the time! However, new steam turbine engines came out after 1897. These made ships like Daring quickly outdated. Because of this, she was sold in 1912.

Building a Fast Ship: HMS Daring's Construction

HMS Daring was built at the Thornycroft shipyard in Chiswick. Her construction started in July 1892. She was given the number 287 by the shipyard.

The ship was launched on November 25, 1893. Mrs. Thornycroft, whose husband founded the company, officially named the ship. During her first sea trials, engineers noticed a problem called cavitation. This is when bubbles form in the water around the propeller. This problem was studied more deeply because of Daring.

How Much Did HMS Daring Cost?

Records show that Decoy and Daring together cost about £66,948. However, other documents suggest each ship cost the Navy around £36,840.

Testing Daring's Speed

Daring began her trials near Gravesend in January 1894. She then moved to a special testing area called the measured mile at Maplin Sands. On July 19, she reached an amazing speed of 28.21 knots. This was faster than her designers expected! This speed earned her the nickname 'Fastest Boat Ever'.

She also had a test to see how much coal she used. On September 18, she showed she could travel almost 38 nautical miles on just one ton of coal. This was at a speed of 10 knots using one boiler. Daring was fully finished and ready for service in February 1895.

HMS Daring's Time in Service

HMS Daring spent her time serving in the waters around the United Kingdom. This was from 1895 until 1912.

Early Years and an Accident

On February 23, 1900, Daring was officially assigned to Portsmouth. She became a tender (a support ship) for HMS Excellent. This was a gunnery (big guns) training school located on Whale Island.

In June 1901, an accident happened while Daring was anchored. One of her boilers exploded. Sadly, one crew member died, and several others were hurt. An investigation found that some tubes in the boiler broke. This caused hot water and steam to escape.

Later Service and Final Days

After repairs, Daring joined the Fleet Reserve at Portsmouth in June 1902. Later that month, she became part of a training group in Plymouth. Lieutenant A. S. Susmann took command of her in August 1902. The next month, she became a tender for HMS Cambridge. This was another gunnery training ship near Plymouth.

However, in September 1902, Daring was reported to be visiting places like Nauplia and Souda Bay in Crete. These places are in the Mediterranean Sea. On October 26, 1907, Daring had a small collision with another destroyer, Starfish, at Devonport. Both ships had some dents.

Finally, HMS Daring was sold on April 10, 1912. She was then taken apart for scrap.
