HMS Severn was a powerful warship that belonged to the Royal Navy of Great Britain. It was a 50-gun fourth-rate ship of the line, which means it was a medium-sized warship armed with many cannons. The ship was built a long time ago, in 1695, at a place called Blackwall Yard.
Building and Rebuilding
HMS Severn was first ordered in 1693 and then launched in 1695. It began its service with the Royal Navy in 1696.
Over time, warships needed updates to stay strong and effective. So, in 1734, the Royal Navy decided to take Severn apart and rebuild it. This happened at Plymouth Dockyard. The rebuild followed new plans from 1733, which were part of a larger set of rules for ship design called the 1719 Establishment.
The rebuilt Severn was launched again on March 28, 1739. It was now even stronger and ready for more action at sea.
Captured and Recaptured
HMS Severn served the Royal Navy until 1746. During this time, it was involved in naval battles. In 1746, the ship was captured by the French navy. This meant the French took control of the ship.
However, Severn's story didn't end there. Just one year later, on October 25, 1747, the British navy fought the second Battle of Cape Finisterre. In this battle, the British managed to capture Severn back from the French!
Even though Severn was back in British hands, it was not put back into active service. Its long career had come to an end.
