Habiba Msika, also spelled Messika (حبيبة مسيكة), was a famous Tunisian singer, dancer, and actress. She was born in 1903 in Testour and passed away on February 21, 1930, in Tunis.
Her birth name was Marguerite Msika. She was the niece of another well-known singer, Leila Sfez. Habiba quickly became very famous using her stage name, Habiba, which means "beloved." She was a popular and daring performer, loved by many people in Tunisia. Her life and career are even featured in the film The Fire Dance by Salma Baccar.

Early Years
Habiba Msika grew up in the Jewish quarter of Tunis. Her family was not wealthy; her parents, Daida and Maïha, worked in the wire trade.
She attended the Israelite Alliance school for seven years, where she learned to read and write. With help from her aunt, she also took singing lessons, learned music theory, and studied classical Arabic. Her teachers included the famous composer Khemaïs Tarnane and Egyptian tenor Hassan Bannan.
She married her cousin, Victor Chetboun, but their marriage was very short. Her first public performance was at the palace of La Marsa. There, she met an important government official.
Her Career
Habiba Msika became a bright star in the entertainment world. She was known for her powerful voice and exciting stage presence. She traveled to Paris, France, where she met famous artists like Pablo Picasso and fashion designer Coco Chanel.
In March 1925, Habiba showed her acting talent. She played the role of Romeo in the play Romeo and Juliet at the Ben Kamla theatre. This was a very bold choice for an actress at that time.
Her Passing
On February 20, 1930, Habiba Msika was tragically injured in her apartment in Tunis. She passed away the next day, on February 21, 1930, due to her injuries. She is buried in the Borgel cemetery in Tunis.
