Hagood wasn't always called Hagood. When the South Carolina Railway first came through, they named the area Sander's Station. This name was likely given in honor of Dr. Swepson Saunders, who owned a large farm called Magnolia Hall plantation in that area.

Later, the community's name was changed to Hagood. It was renamed after Johnson Hagood. He was an important person in South Carolina's history. He served as a brigadier general during the Confederate States Army and later became the governor of South Carolina. So, the community was named to honor him.
