Haikey Creek is a stream in Tulsa County, Oklahoma, in the United States. It and its smaller streams drain an area of about 40 square miles. This area is generally located between 61st and 71st Streets to the north, the Arkansas River to the south, Memorial Drive to the west, and 145th East Avenue to the east. Important places within this area include Haikey Park, the Haikey Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant, and Haikey Chapel.

The Story of Haikey Creek

The name Haikey comes from a Creek Indian family. Many members of this family still live in Tulsa and Broken Arrow today.

Haikey Chapel: A Historic Church

The Haikey Chapel is an Indian Methodist church. It was built in 1913. The lumber for the church was brought from Sapulpa by Ben B. Haikey. His son, C. Ben Haikey, had started the church a few years earlier. At first, the church met in a simple brush arbor.

Protecting Haikey Creek: The Levee

A levee is a long wall built to stop a river from flooding. The levee along Haikey Creek helps protect the surrounding land from floods.

Building the Levee

Construction of the Haikey Creek levee finished in October 1985. This levee is made of earth. It is 5,860 feet long, which is about 1.1 miles. The levee is about 8.5 feet tall on average, but its highest point is 11.4 feet. The top of the levee is 10 feet wide.

Past Floods

The biggest flood recorded in this area happened on June 8, 1974. The levee helps prevent such large floods from causing damage today.
