Hainesville is a small community in Wood County, Texas, United States. It's called an unincorporated community because it doesn't have its own local government like a city does. In the year 2000, about 74 people lived there.

History of Hainesville

The area where Hainesville is located was first settled in 1845. Later, in 1870, a man named Christian H. Haines built a gristmill there. A gristmill is a place where grain is ground into flour.

In 1893, the post office from a nearby community called Dupree moved to this area. It was then renamed Hainesville, honoring Christian H. Haines. His family also owned a general store in the community. Dr. James Marion Puckett, a doctor, also had his office here and might have been one of the first people to help the community grow.

By 1896, about 25 people lived in Hainesville. They had important services like a blacksmith, who made and repaired metal items, and a cotton gin, which separated cotton fibers from their seeds. The first Baptist church in the community was started in 1897.

Farming and Growth

Hainesville's economy was mostly based on farming. People primarily grew cotton, but they also farmed other crops. These included sugar cane, peanuts, melons, and peaches.

The town's post office closed in 1907. However, Hainesville continued to grow for a while. In the 1930s, about 200 people lived there. The community also had six businesses and several churches.

Population Changes and Modern Times

After the 1930s, the population of Hainesville decreased. By 1949, only about 50 people lived there. From 1968 through 2000, the population stayed around 74 people. A map from 1988 showed that Hainesville had two churches, a company, and a community hall.

Old Discoveries and Tornadoes

In 1870, when ditches were being dug for construction near the Haines mill, about 25 old rifles were found. A few years later, an unmarked grave was discovered on a nearby property. It held the body of a man buried in a wooden coffin. Some local stories suggested it might have been the French explorer René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, who was killed in East Texas in 1687. Another idea from the 1950s was that the body belonged to someone from the Moscoso expedition. However, these ideas are usually not believed because there isn't enough proof. Further investigation also showed that the rifles were from the 1700s, not the 1500s as first thought.

Hainesville has also experienced some strong weather. An F1 tornado hit the community on April 11, 1979. Another tornado struck on April 30, 2011, causing several trees to be uprooted.

Geography of Hainesville
