Haley Danita Anderson (born November 20, 1991) is an American competitive swimmer. She is best known for winning a silver medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics. This amazing achievement happened in the 10-kilometer open water swimming event. Open water swimming means racing in natural places like lakes, rivers, or oceans, instead of a swimming pool.

Early Life and College Swimming

Haley Anderson was born on November 20, 1991. Her older sister, Alyssa Anderson, is also a talented swimmer. Both sisters even competed together at the 2009 World Aquatics Championships.

Haley went to the University of Southern California (USC). There, she swam for the USC Trojans swimming and diving team. She competed in college sports from 2010 to 2013.

Becoming a Champion Swimmer

Haley Anderson has had a very successful swimming career, winning many medals.

Junior and World Championships

In 2009, Haley showed her talent at the Junior Pan Pacific Championships. She won first place in both the 800-meter and 1,500-meter freestyle races. Later that year, she competed at the 2009 USA Nationals. She earned a spot to swim at the 2009 World Aquatics Championships in Rome.

Olympic Silver Medalist

In June 2012, Haley qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. She won the FINA Olympic Marathon Swim Qualifier in Portugal for the 10-kilometer open water event.

At the 2012 Olympics, Haley won a silver medal! She finished second in the 10-kilometer marathon event. She was very close to the winner, finishing just 0.40 seconds behind. Her sister, Alyssa, also won a gold medal at the 2012 Olympics as part of the U.S. 4x200-meter freestyle relay team.

More World Championship Wins

Haley continued her success after the Olympics.

  • In 2013, she won a gold medal at the FINA World Championships in Barcelona. This was for the 5-kilometer open water competition.
  • In 2015, she won another gold medal at the World Championships in Kazan. She successfully defended her 5-kilometer open water title.
  • In 2019, she earned a silver medal in the 10-kilometer open water race at the World Championships. She also won a bronze medal in the team event that year.

Haley has also won gold medals at the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in 2014 and 2018 for the 10-kilometer open water event. She even won a gold medal in the 1500-meter freestyle at the 2011 Summer Universiade.
