Halfway Lake is a beautiful lake located in Hartley Township, which is part of Union County, Pennsylvania in the United States. It's a popular spot for outdoor fun and is a main feature of R. B. Winter State Park.

This special lake gets its water from cool, fresh streams that flow from underground springs in the mountains. It was created by people who built a strong dam out of sandstone.

The water in Halfway Lake is usually quite chilly, around 50 degrees Fahrenheit (10 degrees Celsius). This is because much of its water comes directly from deep underground. You can even find a natural spring called Little Bubbler on the west side of the park's beach. This spring is an artesian spring, meaning water naturally flows up from underground without needing a pump.

Fun Things to Do at Halfway Lake

Halfway Lake is a great place for many outdoor activities, especially if you love being near water!

Swimming and Beach Fun

You can go swimming in the lake, which is perfect for cooling off on a warm day. Just remember, there aren't any lifeguards watching the beach, so it's important to be careful and swim safely.

Fishing Adventures

If you enjoy fishing, Halfway Lake is a fantastic spot. It's known as a "cold fishery," which means it's home to fish that prefer cooler water. The lake is regularly stocked with different kinds of trout, including brook, brown, and rainbow trout.

Ice Fishing in Winter

When winter arrives and the lake freezes over, you can even go ice fishing! For safety, the ice needs to be at least 4 inches (about 10 centimeters) thick before anyone is allowed to walk or fish on it.
