A Look at Its History
How the Centre Began
The idea for the Halifax Shopping Centre first appeared in public records in 1956. This was when a company called Eaton's asked for permission to build on land where the St. Patrick's Boys Home used to be. Construction for the main shopping centre building started in February 1961.
The centre was built by Webb and Knapp (Canada) Ltd. Their team designed it with help from The Graham Company and architect Gregory Lambros. Anglin-Norcross Maritime Ltd. was the main company that built the first parts of the mall.
Grand Opening Day
The Halifax Shopping Centre officially opened its doors at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 11, 1962. It was advertised as "The Marketplace of the Maritimes." People said that "never in the history of Halifax have so many stores opened on one day!" The local newspaper, The Chronicle Herald, reported that about 27,000 people visited on the opening day.
Big Changes Over the Years
The shopping centre has grown and changed a lot over time:
- In 1989, the Halifax Shopping Centre got bigger. It added a food court, more store space (about 75,000 square feet (7,000 m2)), and three new parking decks.
- In 2001, the centre bought and updated the old Sears store across Mumford Road. This new area was named the Halifax Shopping Centre Annex. This made the total store space over 1,061,361 square feet (98,603.7 m2). The main bus stop, Mumford Terminal, was also moved at this time.
- In 2007, the main shopping centre building had a big makeover. They updated the look and added better signs to help people find their way around.
- In 2008, the centre bought the West End Mall and turned it into the Mumford Professional Centre. This brought the total space for the entire Halifax Shopping Centre area to 1,298,445 square feet (120,629.5 m2).
- In 2015, a new $70 million renovation began. The old bowling alley was replaced with a new food court called The Terrace. Many stores were made larger, and another 75,000 square feet (7,000 m2) of space was added to the main building. They also added taller ceilings, more windows, and a large 14,000 square feet (1,300 m2) skylight. This big project was finished in the fall of 2016.
