Halldis Moren Vesaas (born November 18, 1907 – died September 8, 1995) was a famous Norwegian poet, translator, and writer of children's books. She became one of the most important Norwegian writers of her time.

Biography of a Norwegian Writer

Halldis Moren Vesaas was born on a family farm. This farm was located near Trysil in Hedmark county, Norway. Her father was Sven Moren, a well-known story writer, poet, and playwright. Halldis was the oldest of five children and the only girl in her family. One of her brothers was Sigmund Moren, who became a philologist (someone who studies language).

She studied at the teacher college in Elverum from 1925 to 1928. After that, she worked in different jobs in Hamar and Oslo. In 1930, she moved to Switzerland. There, she worked as a secretary for three years. In April 1934, she married the famous Norwegian author, Tarjei Vesaas. They made their home on the Midtbø farm in Vinje in Telemark County. Her husband also worked as a teacher there for a few years.

Halldis Moren Vesaas published her first book of poetry in 1929. She was 22 years old at the time. This first collection was called Harp and Dagger (Harpe og dolk). Some of her most famous poetry books include Speech of Troubled Times (Tung tids tale), The Tree (Treet), In a Different Forest (I ein annan skog), and House of Life (Livshus).

She also wrote and translated plays for the theater. She worked a lot with Det Norske Teatret in Oslo. Besides that, she wrote articles on many different topics. She also worked as a consultant for a publishing company. From 1949 to 1969, she was on the board of the Riksteatret, a national touring theater. In 1938, her first children's book translation was published. Her writing was highly praised in Norway. People admired her for bravely sharing her personal thoughts about women's lives. She wrote about different stages, like youth, marriage, motherhood, being a widow, and even finding new love in old age.
