The name Ham was first written down in 1201. Back then, it was called Westoneshamme. The word Ham comes from an old English word, hamm. This word means "water meadow" or "land in the bend of a river." Ham also gave its name to a famous old house nearby, Ham House, and to the River Hamoaze.
