A hamdog is a fun and unique sandwich that combines two popular foods: a Hot dog and a beef patty. It uses a special bread bun that is shaped to hold both a hot dog and a beef patty. This tasty creation is then topped with things like cheese, pickles, sauces, tomato, lettuce, and onion. It's like getting a hamburger and a hot dog all in one bite!
How the Hamdog Started
The Australian Hamdog
The idea for one kind of hamdog came from an Australian named Mark Murray in 2004. His version uses a beef patty that is cut in half. A frankfurter (which is another name for a hot dog) is placed between these two halves of the patty. Then, it's topped with yummy ingredients like cheese, pickles, different sauces, tomato, lettuce, and onion.
Mark Murray even got a special design patent for his unique bun in 2009. A design patent means he officially owned the special look and shape of his hamdog bun. This helped protect his invention.
Another Hamdog Idea
In February 2005, a different kind of hamdog was created by Chandler Goff. He owned a bar in Decatur, Georgia, in the United States. His hamdog was made by wrapping a hot dog in a half-pound of hamburger meat. It also included bacon, cheese, and onion, all served on a hoagie bun. This version was deep-fried and sometimes came with a fried egg on top and a side of French fries.
Chandler Goff started selling his hamdog at the Indiana State Fair in 2006. State fairs are big events where people go to have fun, ride rides, and try different foods.
Hamdog Eating Contest
In 2007, a hamdog eating contest was started in Vadnais Heights, Minnesota, by a place called Jimmy's Food and Drink. In this contest, people compete to see who can eat the most hamdogs. The winner doesn't get a prize, just "bragging rights," which means they get to tell everyone they won!
