A Look Back: Hamilton's History

Hamilton has an interesting past! It was once the very first county seat for Monroe County. A county seat is like the main town where the government offices are located.

In 1830, Monroe County was divided, and a new county called Lowndes County was created to the south. Because of this change, the county seat for Monroe County was moved north to a town called Aberdeen.

The original community of Hamilton is sometimes called "Old Hamilton." It's about 2 miles (3.2 km) east of a newer community called New Hamilton. New Hamilton started in the late 1880s when the Kansas City, Memphis and Birmingham Railroad arrived, bringing new growth and people to the area.

The area of Hamilton covers about 3.2 square miles (8.3 sq km). Most of this is land, with a small part, about 0.02 square miles (0.05 sq km), being water. Cedar Grove Creek forms the southeastern edge of the community, and Wilson Creek runs just west of the town center. These two creeks meet at the southwest corner of Hamilton to form McKinley Creek, which flows into the Tombigbee River.
